Today new students arrived at La Cunza, so the day was a little bit different. They all had to go to school early and take the initial test, like we did our first day. Our regular teachers were giving the test, so we had a new teacher for the morning, Jon. During that class, we watched some short videos, pausing periodically to hypothesis what was going to happen in the story line. This allowed us to practice the future tense. During the second class we had our normal teacher again, and we got to meet the new students in our class. Liam, from California, and Olivia, from Singapore, joined our group. Six other students joined the other class: one of them is from Colorado, another from France, two from Sweden, and two from Washington. In the second class, we learned a little about the new students and worked on food vocabulary by discussing different bocadillos, a traditional lunch in Spain. In the afternoon, we learned that the project for this week is to design an escape room. That should be interesting.

Following classes for the day, we had lunch in the park, like usual, and learned a little more about the new students. Then, the afternoon activities began. Since its Monday, the activity had to do with getting to know the city. First, we hiked up Urgull hill to get a panoramic view. This is the hill with the Jesus statue standing at the top. Once again, it was beautiful. There was a great view of both the surfing beach and the city. You could also see La Concha beach fairly well.

After taking lots of pictures, we divided into three groups for a scavenger hunt throughout the city. My group consisted of Makaela, a boy from France, a boy from Colorado, and a boy from Sweden. We had to complete tasks from writing in the sand to talking to locals. It was actually really fun, and we got to practice our Spanish. Makaela and I danced the salsa in front of McDonald’s (or attempted to), talked to a man selling bracelets, took a picture with local surfers, talked to local teenagers about festivals in San Sebastian, and completed many other tasks. Given that the locals understood our Spanish, Makaela and I decided we must be doing okay. During the two hours we had to complete the scavenger hunt, we paused briefly to get some empanadas from our favorite market and finished every task but one.

Mike, the activities director, then treated everyone to ice cream before sending us on our way for the evening. It was another good day in San Sebastian, getting to know the city and the people.
