There are no words to explain the feeling after getting off of a restless, long, day and night travel in a whole new place with a whole other language, just you and your best friend. The closest I can come is overwhelmed. After saying good-bye to family and friends and narrowly making all of our connections, we arrived for our long anticipated Spain immersion trip. Heads foggy with most of our Spanish just out of reach, Makaela and I managed to meet our respective families. My mother greeted me with a kiss to each cheek and friendly conversation. She was very kind to tell me my Spanish is good, but I found it difficult to form the sentences I wanted to say. It was quickly determined that it is much easier for me to understand than speak. We learned a little bit about each other, and I introduced her to some of my family and friends through pictures. A short while later, I met the rest of my host family, but it wasn’t who I expected. Contrary to what I initially thought, I have a host mother, sister, brother, and dog. They all seem very kind, and the Labrador dog, Luna, is very cute. My mother made me sunny-side up eggs and rice for a late lunch before I proceeded to unpacking and settling in.

Makaela and her host sister, Daniela, came to pick me up, and Daniela showed us around central San Sebastián. It is beautiful. There are three beaches in the area, a mountain, and lots of shops and restaurants. We explored for awhile, but, then, Daniela took us to get Pinchos, which are similar to Tapas. They are served on a bar, and you simply pick which ones you want and return to your table to eat. After eating, Makaela and I both exhausted from a long few days returned home to get some rest. One thing can be said for sure: it will take some time and some sleep to become fully comfortable in this new adventure, but it is one I am looking forward to.
