Today is a travel day. We are leaving Rome and going down to Marina del Cantone. Our train wasn’t until just before noon, so we got to sleep in, which was so nice. We also had enough time for a quick breakfast in the square before our taxi picked us up. Joey and I were even able to go the market’s square for some peaches.

At the train station, we noticed our train had been delayed about thirty minutes. I didn’t even know a train like that could be delayed. Nonetheless, it gave us a little time to sit. Once the train arrived, it was only about an hour down to Naples. The perfect amount of time to catch up on some blogging.

From there, we headed to a different section of the Naples train station, where we could catch a train down to Sorrento. This train was nothing like the train we took from Rome to Naples. It was more like a metro above ground. Getting on the train was difficult, especially with luggage, as everyone tried to pile in so quickly. The train car was boiling hot, packed with people, and standing room only. It could have been worse, but it was a long, hot ride. At one point, an accordion and saxophone player came through and played music for us, which was a nice distraction. We also met a nice couple from the Seattle area and talked to them for awhile. All of that helped pass the time. With stops and all, the ride was about an hour and a half.

Getting off the train in Sorrento felt so good as fresh air hit our skin, although it was hot. We wheeled our luggage about five minutes to a laundromat. It was definitely time for a laundry day since there wouldn’t be access to a laundry machine where we are staying in Marina del Cantone. At the laundromat we scrounged for coins and soap before doing three loads of laundry. This gave me more time to catch up on some blogs. Since I got out of my San Sebastian routine, I’ve fallen behind on blogs, as you may have noticed. I apologize for that.

Clean clothes now packed, we walked back to the train station to get a taxi to the other side of the peninsula, where we are staying. The view on the way up the hill from Sorrento was absolutely gorgeous. You could see the whole town and the water. Shortly after seeing the view though, I fell asleep.

Arriving at our hotel in Marina del Cantone, we dropped our luggage off in the bungalow and got organized. The room kind of reminds us of some of the places we stayed in Costa Rica. Dad headed down into town to find a dinner place, and Joey, Mom, and I went to check out the hotel’s little beach. On the walk down, we saw the camper section of the hotel and the tents section of the hotel. Turns out, they have quite the variety of rooming options. The beach is pebbles, not sand, but it is beautiful. There aren’t waves, and the shore feels more like a lake. Since there are no waves, the water is crystal clear. The temperature was definitely cool though when I put my feet in though.

After walking back up the hill from the beach, we met Dad at the road and walked into town. We are no longer in a touristy area because there were very few families at the restaurant we went to. It was right on the water and extended out as a dock and overlook. Joey and I ordered gnocchi, which was delicious. Dad and Mom each got a pasta as well, with some fish to go along with it.

After we finished our main course, our waiter came out and went to the fish tank in the middle of the restaurant, with a net. Not fully aware of what was happening, we watched. He pulled out a lobster, brought it to a table to show them, and, then, brought it back to the kitchen. The waiter briefly hesitated by our table to show us, and the lobster started squirming around. Let’s just say Joey is traumatized.

For dessert, Joey and I ordered a bowl of fruit to share. What arrived though was much larger. It was a giant plate filled with whole peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, and maybe some other similar fruits. We were shocked when it came. There was so much, and we couldn’t get all the way through it. The nectarine was my favorite though. It was very juicy and sweet.

The walk back to the bungalow was beautiful as the moon lit up the sky and clouds. The moon was only visible for a little bit before it slipped behind the clouds. It was such a gorgeous evening away from the city.
